Anthem is an action role-playing game developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts. It was released for Xbox One in February 2019. As a fan of both BioWare and the action RPG genre, I was excited to dive into this game and explore its vast open world. However, after spending a considerable amount of time with Anthem, I must say that it falls short of my expectations.

One of the main aspects that drew me to Anthem was its stunning visuals. The game world is beautifully crafted, with lush environments and detailed character designs. The graphics are truly impressive, and the game does a great job of immersing you in its sci-fi universe. The sound design is also top-notch, with a captivating soundtrack and realistic sound effects that enhance the overall experience.

However, where Anthem truly disappoints is in its gameplay mechanics. The core gameplay loop revolves around completing missions and taking on various enemies, both on foot and in your Javelin exosuit. While the idea of piloting a powerful exosuit is exciting, the execution feels lackluster. The controls are clunky and unresponsive, making movement and combat feel frustrating at times. The AI of both enemies and allies is also questionable, often leading to repetitive and predictable encounters.

Another major issue with Anthem is its lack of content and variety. The game world, while visually stunning, feels empty and lifeless. The missions quickly become repetitive, with little variation in objectives or enemy types. The lack of a compelling story or memorable characters further adds to the game's overall lack of depth. It feels like a missed opportunity to create a rich and engaging world that players can truly get lost in.

Furthermore, Anthem suffers from technical issues and bugs. From frequent crashes to long loading times, these issues can significantly impact the overall enjoyment of the game. While some of these problems have been addressed through updates and patches, they still persist to some extent.

Despite its flaws, Anthem does have some redeeming qualities. The cooperative multiplayer aspect of the game can be enjoyable, especially when playing with friends. The customization options for your Javelin exosuit are also extensive, allowing you to personalize your character to your liking. Additionally, the game's flight mechanics, when they work properly, can be exhilarating and add a unique element to the gameplay.

In conclusion, Anthem falls short of its potential as an action RPG. While it boasts stunning visuals and a captivating world, its clunky gameplay mechanics, lack of content, and technical issues hinder the overall experience. It is a game that had the potential to be great but ultimately fails to deliver. I would give Anthem for Xbox One a rating of 2 out of 5 stars.
